Ozone (greek Ozon = smell) has been discovered 1840 by Christian Schonbein during a water electrolysis experiment. It consists of three oxygen atoms as an unstable molecule, i.e. it decays to oxygen again. Humans can smell ozone already at a concentration of 0,02 mg/m3.
Ozone in environment:
Ozone in the upper atmosphere (the "ozone layer") occurs naturally formed by effect of UV-radiation and protects life on earth by filtering out harmful UV-radiation from the sun. Near the earth's surface - in the troposphere - ozone is formed through a complex set of chemical reaction involving hydrocarbons, oxides of nitrogen from emissions in the presence of sunlight.
Ozone in technical application:
Ozone is used as one of the strongest oxidant for various applications.
It shall be generated by electrical corona discharge on site, which is still the only economical process for ozone generation. The "input" needed for ozone generation is just air or oxygen and electrical energy.
